On Leadership, Governance and the Future of Women in Taekwon-Do
International Women’s Day Message
On this International Women’s Day, I am honoured to address Taekwon-Do practitioners across the world, and especially the women whose commitment, resilience, and leadership continue to shape our art.
The Values of Taekwon-Do
Taekwon-Do has always been more than a martial art. It is a discipline that teaches responsibility, self-control, respect, and service — values that extend far beyond the dojang and into every aspect of life.
These principles have guided me throughout my journey, both within the International Taekwon-Do Federation and in my professional life beyond Taekwon-Do. They remind us that leadership is not about position, but about accountability, fairness, and integrity.
Women in Taekwon-Do
Over the years, I have witnessed a powerful and encouraging shift: women are no longer only participants in Taekwon-Do — they are increasingly decision-makers, umpires, administrators, and leaders within National Governing Bodies and international structures.
This progress did not happen by chance. It is the result of discipline, consistency, courage, and a willingness by women to step forward, even in spaces where they were once under-represented.
Leadership and Responsibility
Leadership, particularly for women, often requires balancing firmness with empathy, confidence with humility, and tradition with progress.
In moments of difficult decision-making, I have always been guided by principles of fairness, transparency, and the long-term good of the organisation and its people.
Taekwon-Do teaches us to remain calm under pressure, to act decisively, and to take responsibility for our choices — lessons that are invaluable in governance and management.
Developing the Future
As we look to the future, sustainable development in Taekwon-Do depends on ethical leadership, inclusive governance, and mentorship.
We must consciously create pathways for young women to grow not only as athletes, but as coaches, umpires, administrators, and leaders.
Representation matters — because when women see others leading with confidence and integrity, they begin to see leadership as possible for themselves.
Closing Message
To the women of Taekwon-Do: your presence matters, your voice matters, and your leadership matters.
Whether you are on the mat, behind the judging table, or in the boardroom, you are contributing to the strength and future of our Federation.
Let us continue to uphold the values of Taekwon-Do, to support one another, and to ensure that the next generation of women inherits an organisation that recognises their potential and values their contribution.
Happy International Women’s Day.
